Making and testing mock-ups is a key part of Studio Gang’s design process. Created to work through a specific question, often at full scale and using the intended final construction materials and methods, they yield insights that models cannot.
This second exhibition in the office’s new Chicago gallery explores what happens when architectural mock-ups—normally ephemeral and embedded in design—become subjects in their own right.
The physical mock-ups featured in the show are grouped in four categories: How will it feel? (mock-ups testing human scale); How will it look? (mock-ups testing visual appearance); How will it be made? (mock-ups testing fabrication); and How will it perform? (mock-ups testing performance).
Using photographs to resurrect the spirits of mock-ups past, alongside a physical selection of those that remain, the exhibition asks: what does it mean to reanimate these objects, long after the original questions that prompted their existence have been answered?
Encouraging visitors to discover the categorized yet fluid relationships between the diverse mock-ups on display, the exhibition also materializes the most exciting aspects of mocking-up: the interdisciplinary collaboration and burst of creative discovery that propel a project forward.

Located on the garden level of Studio Gang's Chicago office, the gallery gives pedestrians a sneak peek of the exhibitions inside from the sidewalk.

Studio Gang's Gallery connects to a new Visible Archive that holds the Studio's growing collection of architectural models, sketches, drawings, and other materials. Studio Gang Mock-Ups is the first Gallery exhibition to curate a focused selection of the archival collection for public viewing.
